The Sun Between Us

Inspired by Vincent van Gogh's iconic Sunflower painting, I took it a step further and added a face to show how a familiar symbol can evolve beyond still life into a narrative about human connection and the cycles of nature.
Placing them within an abandoned landscape, I sought to extend Van Gogh's celebration of vitality into a contemporary meditation on relationships, transformation, and hope.
The vibrant colour and immersive landscape also acknowledge artists such as David Hockney, whose work demonstrates how colour and environment can evoke emotion as powerfully as the subject itself.
Rather than revisiting the past and recreating what those artists have already done, this painting continues the conversation, using the sunflower as a timeless symbol of resilience, love, impermanence, and the enduring human desire to find light in one another and to help one another.
